The Wildlife Managment facility is a 5,112 acre woodland tract located near the summit of the Tug Hill Plateau in the Town of Montague, Lewis County. This forested area is characterised by hardwood uplands and conifer wetlands. Approximatley 7 miles of truck trails have been designed to facilitate public access. The truck trails are great for cross-country skiing in the winter and hiking during the summer months.
These trails are suitable for day hikes, or your trip can be extended by exploring some of the access roads. Camping permits are required annd must be obtained from the regional wildlife manager. These permits are usually only issued during big game season. Hunting and trapping are also allowed in the area.
DIRECTIONS: The easiest way to get to the Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area is to take Route 177, which runs east-west from Adams Center to West Lowville. Take Sears Pond Road, which is approximatley 10 miles west of Lowville at Bellwood, south for 3.6 miles to the intersection with Rector Road and Parker Road. Take Parker Road, which continues south for 1.8 miles until it intersects with Flatrock Road. The sign for the Tug Hill Wildlife Management Area will be at this intersecton. You can park here during the summer months. During the winter, Parking is available at the intersectoin of Sears Pond Road, Rector Road, and Parker Road at the Montague Inn.
